Vista tip for end user

If you have recently bought a new computer, chances are pretty good that it has Windows Vista installed. The new look may confuse you, but there are some neat features. And if you miss the old features, there are ways to find them. For example when you click on the computer icon to view/find your resources, you’ll find that things have changed from the old Windows Explorer (My computer) layout. The folder tree is now the Navigation pane which provides access to commonly used folders and the Folders list (click image for larger view).

If you miss your Menu Bar with File, Edit, etc., click on the Organize tab, go to Layout, and select Menu Bar to permanently display the Menu Bar. Or if you only want to see the Menu Bar on demand, press the Alt key on the keyboard the next time you need it. The Menu Bar will display until you click on something else, then it “hides” until you press the Alt key again (click image for larger view).

The Address Bar is still at the top and, as in the past, it displays your current location. The neat new feature in the Address Bar is that you can click on a location to navigate directly to it or, depending on the location, navigate to any sub folders under the target. Click the image to see where I have clicked on Local Disk (C:) and can click on any folder to open it (i.e. Test).
