Search Engine Optimization: An Experiment

I’ve decided to use the new Springhouse Blog to document an ongoing experiment in optimizing a website for the search engines.

Our target site is www.tinytoesportraits.com, which is my daughter’s photography business. She has recently moved from the Pittsburgh area to our side of the state, and is trying to build up her client base in this area. Unfortunately, photography is one of those businesses where word of mouth is the best marketing tool, and all of her ‘mouths’ are in Pittsburgh. So we decided to utilize the next best marketing tool for someone with a limited income … the Internet.

Although she has had a web site since she started her photography business, the only way to find it on Google was to type in “Tiny Toes Portraits” … which is really only useful for people who already know her business name and can’t make the leap from that to www.tinytoesportraits.com.

Obviously, some serious search engine optimization is in order here. Keyword research, analyzing the competition, content analysis … and then changes. And as we make changes, I will report back here, so everyone can share in what works and what doesn’t.

Stay tuned.
